Font Graffiti

Back in the day of slow internet connections, using fonts available on the computer was a good way to keep the size of web page files as small as possible. Today, downloading a font file isn’t really that big of a deal with high speed connections, fast storage systems and fast processors. (more…)

Moved to a New Web Host

I recently moved my sites to a new hosting company. Previously, I had been using 1 &1 for my hosting. For the most part, 1 & 1 provided a good service. I had no complaints about down time or how fast my site loaded. But, 1 & 1 has not kept up with the times. They have a custom admin screen that is klunky at best. There support is outsourced to the lowest price bidder based on the responses I received on a couple of questions. (more…)

StudioPressCreate a Custom Widget

If you want to create a custom widget, check out these two posts: Justin Tadlock and Bill Erickson. Both of them provide excellent examples of how to create a WordPress widget. (more…)

StudioPress Custom Page TemplateModify the Loop Output

The simplest custom template just modifies the query to return a different set of posts than would normally be returned. This is a simple template modification made even more simple by the genesis_custom_loop() function. This function is used when you don’t want the default output. To use the genesis_custom_loop() function, all you have to do is remove the normal loop and call genesis_custom_loop() with the arguments or values that you want. (more…)

StudioPress Custom Page TemplateWhere to Begin

At first blush, it’s not that obvious how to create custom templates for the Genesis framework. But once you see how it’s done, it becomes second nature. First we need to understand how the framework flows. Let’s take a look at the index.php file. (more…)

Custom Post Type thumbnailBackground

Not too long ago I was asked to help another developer. He had a couple of sites that needed to be finished and didn’t have the time to finish them. I agreed to help him and of course bill him for my time. Yes, I have a mortgage and need to eat too. (more…)

Audio Player for WordPress – Flash or Not?

coment Thursday, March 17th, 2011

I recently had the opportunity to evaluate audio players for a client who needed one. I haven’t used one on any other sites I’ve developed so I was interested to see what was available. Fortunately, there are a couple of good, free audio player plugins. (more…)

Wishlist Member for Your Membership Site

WishList Member PluginI recently had the opportunity to work with the Wishlist Member plugin. Wishlist Member (WLM) is a WordPress (WP) plugin that allows you to set up a restricted area of your WP site and charge a fee for access to what is called premium content. This premium content is, presumably, information, documents, audio, images and/or video for which people are willing to pay. Once set up, the site is described as a membership site. (more…)
